| I Know What the Scriptures Say, But What Do They Really Mean | ||||

By Gregory B Articles For Christians Anyone who can read pretty good can probably read the Bible word for word and maybe they can even make some sense out of it, but do they really understand what they're reading. I've been asking these questions for years now and seem to get the same responses. Most Christians, who read the Bible, will tell you that they understand it, until you start asking them some questions about it. I know it's not right, but sometimes when I meet a Christian or I'm talking to one on the Internet, I will pretend that I don't know much about the Bible. This almost automatically gives them more knowledge about the Bible, making them an instant expert and some of the stuff that they're talking about, isn't even in the Bible. Here is an example of what I'm talking about, Proverbs 6:32 But a man who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does so destroys himself. How would you interpret this Bible verse? I've selected it at random, because there are so many that seem like they can be interpreted in different ways. Whoever does so destroy himself, what does that really mean? Will this person die, become addicted to something, live in some sort of on earth purgatory or does this person destroy himself in other ways that we don't know of. You don't have to read very far into the Bible, to find out what I'm talking about. You might think that you understand the Bible, because someone else is giving you instructions on how to interpret it. However, how do you know for sure that these people or even your own interpretations are the same as those who wrote the original Bible verses? |
