My Church Pastor Doesn't Receive a Salary from Our Church

I love to hear this statement; my church pastor doesn't receive a salary from our church. There is nothing that makes me happier than to hear someone who is living a life which they truly believe in. Very few religious organizations adopt this kind of thinking, but I wish more would.

The other day I was watching the Larry King show and he was talking to a popular pastor who lived in Texas and has one of the largest churches in the United States. If my memory serves me correctly, Larry asked the church leader this question,” Do you receive a salary from your church?”

The church leader’s response was,” No.” He reaffirmed his answer by making it sound like he didn't need the money and was financially secure. I wasn't watching this show with anyone else, so I couldn't ask them what their opinions and whether or not they truly believed that this particular church leader was telling the truth.

A few days later it dawned on me that this person couldn't afford to lie about something like this, but this doesn't mean that he didn't receive money from the church in other ways. If Larry really wanted to ask a good question, he would asked the church leader,” Do you or anyone in your immediate family receive any money from your church at all for anything?”

I'm only guessing, but I could easily see the church paying for all of his traveling expenses. This would make sense to me and I wouldn't hold it against the church or the church leaders. The problem I have with statements like,” I don't draw a salary from my church,” is that other people assume that they don't receive any money, ever from their church and this might give them the wrong impression.

I'm not complaining about church leaders who do draw salaries and make it a full-time job, but I would like to see more church leaders practicing what they preach. If you're asking people to donate their time and money, you should also.
