| Removing the Guilt from Christianity | ||||
|
By Greg Vanden Berge Articles For Christians I know that some of the Christians out there actually are motivated by other reasons than guilt, but for those who are easily motivated by guilt, I would like to share something with you. Stop letting your church leaders make you feel guilty enough to control and manipulate you to do things that aren't necessarily going to be in your best interest. If I could remove anything from any religion, including Christianity, it would be guilt. If we could get rid of the guilt, I don't know how many large religious organizations could survive. If you look at the older church leaders, you find heavy doses of guilt laden messages that seem to be meant to increase your motivation to live a better life. What does guilt actually mean to Christianity? Financial abundance and I mean by the truckloads. I actually have an inside scoop on one particular pastor that I worked for while I was turning an old garage into a food storage shelter. Every once in awhile, he would bring some of the wealthier members of his congregation to look at the progress and ask them for money. I don't think this particular church leader was really that interested in showing them the construction project and was more interested in the latter. Often these people would give large sums of money and he told me one day that it was because they felt guilty. He explained some of their actions and what motivated them to donate money to the church building fund. I learned a lesson that I would never forget and hopefully you won't either. Guilt isn't only used in religion, but often used at your place of business, raising children and other relationships. When I was a young man, I remembered living in a constant world of guilt and fear that God would punish me somehow, if I made the wrong choice in a particular activity. I don't know if it's possible to remove guilt from religion, but the future of Christianity is going to be depending upon it. I don't remember Jesus ever saying that we needed to make our neighbors feel guilty, but I do remember him saying that we need to love our neighbors. |
